The Importance of Practice in Hypnosis: Ways to Enhance Your Skills

The Importance of Practice in Hypnosis: Ways to Enhance Your Skills

As a distance learning hypnosis lecturer, I understand that practicing hypnosis can challenge many students. That’s why I’ve written this column—to help you find effective ways to practice your hypnosis skills and build confidence in your abilities.

Find Volunteers

One of the best ways to practice hypnosis is to work with volunteers who are interested in the process. Finding willing participants helps you refine your techniques and gain hands-on experience.

Here’s a simple script to use when looking for volunteers:

Imagine you’re in a social situation, attending evening classes at a community college, or participating in a book club—anywhere you meet people, even online.

You can say:
“Hello, I’m a hypnotist, and I’m doing research on some techniques that can help people feel good. If you’re facing challenges like stress, confidence issues, or weight loss, I can help you with that.”

Notice that I encourage you to say “I’m a hypnotist” rather than “I’m studying hypnosis.” This instills confidence in potential volunteers and makes them more open to your help.

Another effective approach is to act as a hypnosis researcher. By adopting this mindset, you’ll focus on learning and experimenting with different techniques, making the process more productive.

Once you find volunteers, practice basic techniques with them. Use pre-written scripts, experiment with different inductions, and refine your ability to guide them into hypnosis.

Self-Practice

I always emphasize the importance of self-hypnosis with my students. Hypnosis is a feeling—a vibration that you tune into. To guide someone into hypnosis, you must first deeply understand the state yourself.

In my Udemy courses, I provide students with pre-recorded MP3s to help them experience hypnosis firsthand. Hypnosis is much like love—it’s subjective, and everyone experiences it differently. It’s a living, evolving experience, which is what makes it so beautiful.

Here are some practical self-hypnosis tips:

  • Record your own voice and listen to it.
  • Create hypnosis MP3s to guide yourself.
  • Practice speaking in a natural yet powerful manner.
  • Stay calm and composed each time you perform hypnosis.

Learn by Doing: My Personal Experience

When I first started hypnosis, I was self-taught. I built my confidence and skills through relentless practice. Early on, I found my first volunteer—a friend who wanted to feel happier. He reached out to me because I was posting motivational content on Facebook and asking for volunteers.

Soon after, two more people asked for my help, and before I knew it, I had over 30 hours of practice under my belt. Initially, I didn’t charge, but I gained invaluable experience.

Through trial and error, I learned to overcome nervousness. I vividly remember feeling anxious back in 2017, but using techniques like the light and heavy hands suggestibility test gave me confidence. Over time, I worked with countless clients, helping them with issues like:

  • Confidence
  • Weight loss
  • Smoking cessation
  • Stress and anxiety
  • Sleep improvement
  • Past life regressions

By consistently practicing and helping others, I honed my craft and became a master of the hypnotic arts. Today, in 2025, I no longer experience nervousness because I trust my skills and always have a flexible plan.

Light & Heavy Hands - Suggestibility Test

Hypnosis is a Dance: Mastering the Art

Hypnosis is a verbal symphony, a flow of words that ignites the imagination and relaxation. Many people misunderstand hypnosis due to Hollywood portrayals and stage gimmicks. They expect to be completely spaced out or unconscious, which is far from reality.

In truth, hypnosis is a focused awareness state, much like reading a book or watching TV. It’s a collaboration between the hypnotist and the subject. Your job is to guide them into this state, not to impose it upon them.

Embrace Failure and Keep Practicing

Failure is an essential part of mastering hypnosis. It has taught me patience, adaptability, and clarity in communication. The biggest obstacle for most hypnotists isn’t their skill—it’s the misconceptions surrounding hypnosis.

Some people expect magic, while others are skeptical. As hypnotists, we must educate and demonstrate the true power of hypnosis: the ability to help people transform their lives through focus and suggestion.

My Journey with Hypnosis: How I Found Purpose, Healing, and Growth

Eight years ago, I found myself deeply immersed in personal development, inspired by the teachings of Tony Robbins. At the time, I was studying criminology at the University of Malta and developed a fascination with sociology, psychology, and understanding human behavior. I earned my degree in criminology, but my journey was far from over—there was still a lot I wanted to uncover about myself and the world around me. During that time, I was often overwhelmed, anxious, and looking for ways to bring more peace into my life. When I first tried a hypnosis recording, I was amazed. I felt a powerful sense of calm and relief, a connection to my inner self that I’d never experienced before. In a regression session, I even found peace with my inner child, helping me let go of past fears and doubts. This experience sparked a new passion in me—I wanted to learn everything I could about hypnosis and hypnotherapy. While diving into hypnosis, I was also exploring sports. I wasn't naturally gift...
